Beautiful shot Jane, Great composition and colours and I think the smoke adds a bit of unearthly mood to the scene.

Thank you so much Clifford. Everything lined up nicely for this shot after he finally swam out from behind the cattails. The thick smoke we were enveloped in certainly made it feel a little surreal out there and it does come through in the photo as you noted.

Awesome catch that you have there Heather. I would be very proud to catch a beautyful duck like that. Composition with the surrounding is just perfect. Very well done.

Thank you so much for your comment Yves. He is a very nice looking bird and it felt so good just to see them and all the other birds back in the water again. It seemed like I had waited a long time for their return.

Thank you so much for your comment Debra,. When I saw this fellow I knew that I couldn't leave without trying to get some photos of him. It's not very often an opportunity like that comes along with these ducks since they tend to stay in the background at times. We're finally getting the rain we've been needing so things are looking up.

What a gorgeous composition with sharp focus, lots of detail and nice reflection. That is one handsome duck Heather. Nicely done. Stay safe with all the wildfires in the area. It seems like we are off to a bad start this spring with all the wildfires burning.

Description
In spite of heavy smoke in the air that day I decided to check out a nearby marsh on my way home. A pair of Northern Shoveler ducks stood out best in the smoke and it was especially nice to see them as they are among my top favorite ducks to photograph. Although the female was too busy feeding to pose for me her mate was very accommodating as he watched over her.
