Ambien (generic: zolpidem tartrate) is a sedative-hypnotic medication prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia, particularly difficulty falling asleep. It works by enhancing GABA activity in the brain, producing a calming effect. Ambien acts quickly, within 15–30 minutes, and should be taken right before bedtime when at least 7–8 hours of sleep is possible.
