Description
Caspian Terns are one of the largest tern species in North America. It is easily identified by its large size, large very heavy orange bill, and if you hear it, it loud raucous squawk is very distinctive. They breed in colonies along larger bodies of water. This one is going through its post-breeding moult, as one can see some whitish feathers on the top of its head, which during prime breeding season is solid black.
I photographed this in late September from a kayak at the south end of the Rondeau Provincial Park marshes.
