A beaver swims up to two others in its colony who were just resting peacefully at the bottom of a tree in a marsh in Ottawa's Petrie Island in the springtime. It's a quiet and secluded area of the Petrie that mostly only locals know about. There was a colony of 5 in total, which included one yearling. The swimming beaver seemed to be on patrol, often coming by to check me out, keeping a very alert eye on me. After a few back-and-forths, the beaver determined I wasn't a threat and would head back to its colony.
