Description
A muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) on a mid-April's afternoon. Muskrats are a key contributor to wetland ecosystems both as masterful engineers, as well as consumers of the habitats they live in and their presence is an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. The extensive lodges and burrow systems which muskrats craft for their homes, are also a vital habitat for many other mammals, waterfowl, and reptiles like snakes and turtles and act as nesting sites, shelter and respite for these species as well. Muskrats foraging habits of digging and grazing help to create openings in vegetation which helps to bolster plant diversity and prevent overgrowth. Additionally, muskrats themselves are a crucial prey species for a number of predators, including coyotes, foxes, raptors, and even otters and mink!
