Description
Home from a transformative 8 night expedition from the northern town of Haida Gwaii (Gaw Tlagee - Old Masset) to its very southern tip of Gangxid Kun (Cape St. James).
Incredibly, despite being 100 km offshore from the Canadian mainland, on the edge of the continental plate where the weather is as rugged as the volcanic/metaphoric terrain, we had 7 straight days of sunshine.
It is going to take some time to sort through and chose pictures to edit, and I'll share them with you as it happens. A Highlight of the trip was receiving the cultural knowledge and perspective of Gaajiiaawa, a Haida elder who accompanied us throughout, adding greatly to our understanding of the landscapes and villages we visited. This mortuary totem is located at SGang Gwaay, the last traditional living Haida village from the early 1900s.
Very grateful to Canadian Geographic and Maple Leaf Adventures for the opportunity to experience this highly unique and very significant Haida land.
