These hawks are great posers and I love the eye contact in this beautiful portrait shot. Very nice composition and detail Debra, and hopefully he will stick around so you'll get a chance for some winter shots too.

Thanks very much Heather. Yes I am really hoping to encounter this hawk again.

A different pose. Viewed with the zoom option to enhence the colors, the eye contact is what stands out, very intence.

Debra Plett

Thanks very much Yves. Hopefully I spot him again and will have a little more time.

Jane LeBlanc

Another great shot. Love the expression. Nice colours and depth of field.

Debra Plett

Thanks very much Jane. One of those shots that you grab quickly because you know you don’t have much time before they fly.

Description
Rough-legged hawks are also known as Roughies. These hawks breed and spend their spring and summer in the Artic regions of North America and Eurasia. During migration Roughies can be seen in the fall and winter months in southern Canada and through much of the US. I spotted this Roughie perched high in a tree scouting the open field beside him. He sat for a few minutes and then took to the sky. This is my first encounter with a Roughie, I am hoping he decides to winter in this area. It would be nice to get some winter shots of this great looking hawk.
