Gorgeous colours and detail and you caught him in a great pose for a beautiful capture Debra. I've found that there's usually a distance factor of from ten to fifteen feet from the subject that's optimal for zooming in to get the best focus. Sometimes I have to remind myself to step back and let the zoom work for me.

Thanks very much Heather I really appreciate your comments and tips. Thinking back I probably was too close to the subject. Hopefully they return for more nectar.

I love the colours Debra...and the honesty!! I also have issues with the big lens, and can only use them with a tripod.

Debra Plett

Thanks Jane, yes I found it very difficult not to shake when trying to focus on something this size. I need to start lifting weights.

Also you must respect the minumum limit focussing ( 6 or 8 feet with those big lens.) I do have focussing issues at very close range too. Those big lens are not done for that and I guess we are playing on the edge of what the lens can do.

Thanks Yves, yes I had to stay at least 8 feet back from the garden. I do have a 100m macro lens but have never really used it much as it is very slow to focus. I don’t think it would catch insects that move quickly. Something more to challenge myself with.

Stricking colors Debra. Like it very much. I would repeat my comment from the #1 photo. Many factors can be responsable for your difficulty to focuss. Those camera are so complex now. Have you set the focussing to a single dot instead of a wide surface as usual.

Debra Plett

Hi Yves thank you for assistance. I will change the focusing and see if that helps with the focusing issue.

Description
I thought I would try getting a few shots of the Red Admiral Butterflies that very fuelling up on my flowers using my 200-600 lens handheld. It was a lot more difficult to focus on than I thought it would be. I might try using a tripod next time.
