My First Bison

Description
Last summer, my wife and I spent a few months exploring the Yukon where we encountered lots of wildlife. One species that was on my checklist to photograph while on the trip was a wild Bison. Nearly wiped out in the 1800s, bison used to dominate the plains of North America. Prior to colonization it's estimated that there were 30 million plains bison and 170,000 wood bison. Conservation efforts in both Canada and the United States means today there are between 350,000 and 400,000 plains bison and 5,000 to 7,000 wood bison left. Despite my best efforts these guys eluded my lens for the duration of my time in the Yukon. Somewhat defeated we packed up and headed toward home on the Alaska Highway. While driving towards the famed Liard hot springs, a huge lumbering beast was crossing the highway in the distance. More followed, It was herd of a couple dozen Bison. I was ecstatic, I finally found the last animal on my wish list. We safely pulled over and out came the long lens. It was awesome capturing a few images of the largest land mammals to roam the continent on my drive back down from the Yukon, and a great way to end the trip.
