Description
Elk are grazers and browsers (they eat both grasses and leaves on trees). The bulls grow antlers that reach a metre in length and can weigh up to 20 kg. The antlers fall off at the end of winter and start growing again in May. They grow at a rate of 25 mm each day and the size depends on the level of testosterone in the bull's system. Antlers are bone and while they are growing they are covered with velvet, which is like a protective skin.
