Description
Meet Lucy. Her mate is Ricky and they have nested in our backyard in a nesting box for several years. This year Lucy worked hard and built her nest in their historic box. About two weeks ago, they abandoned that box and started building in another box. They continued to protect that box and wouldn't allow another pair to nest there. Prior to abandoning their nest another couple tried to take it over. We finally opened it up this past weekend and inside was a beautiful nest with two hatched eggs (no nestlings or dead nestlings though) and two eggs that had not hatched.
Another couple had laid their eggs in their nest after all of her hard work, so they left to build another. We took the nest out of the box. She had collected all of the feathers and straw on her own and they are being recycled now in her new nest.
