Lovely focus and light on the head area, Heather! Your isolation of the darner and the one leaf makes it stand out perfectly. I was photographing a pair of dragonflys copulating once and as soon as they stopped the female turned on the male, caught it and proceeded to chew the head off at the neck. Harsh, but that's the animal and insect kingdoms. The fact that men are still around speaks well for women on the planet.
No kidding :) That must have been quite a sight to see though. Thanks for your comment, Harold!
Thank you, Jeff! That's true, they stand out well against the greenery where they hang out and there seems to be more dragonflies than usual here this year with the hot weather we've been having.
Something so tiny to the naked eye turns out to be quite a surprise when viewed on the computer. The zoom function shows quite clearly survival of the fittest. Nicely captured Heather.
Thank you, Debra! It certainly was a surprise and it's exciting to get a shot like that. I got a similar one recently that was not quite as good, but it makes a person realize that these little guys have to compete to survive for a while too.
Great documentary shot Heather. Good to have the explanation to well understand what is what. Sharp focus on the half-prey and quite interesting to know they eat one another. The blured background help hilighting the darner. Well done.
Thank you, Yves! I was pretty excited when I saw what it was although I got a similar photo recently this was was a better image so I decided to share it. It's pretty cool to get a shot like this once in awhile too!
