Description
Common Nighthawks are insect eaters, and are seldom seen unless they are flying high overhead searching for insects, late in the day. During the daytime, they are roosting quietly in a tree. On the prairies, where there are very few trees, they will roost on a fence post. At Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan, I was treated to seeing several of these birds on a horizontal fence rail. It allowed me to approach so that this photo was hardly cropped at all.
