Linda, this is a great image! There's something to watch for when you get this kind of situation, which is the bright light on the main subject. If your camera has a spot meter option, use it to target the brightest part of the subject. This will force the white area to be perfectly exposed; it also shifts the dynamic range of the balance of the picture. Generally the colours will get darker and richer and the subject a little more defined. Just remember to switch your meter back to normal settings when your done. Also keep the camera on aperture priority and the lens wide open. The soft focus of the background is what "makes" this picture in the first place.
